Lubbock EMS Special Operations is made up of a volunteer group of EMS employees who are interested in training and responding to special situations. These include police standbys, fire scenes, special rescue situations, hazmat responses, mass casualty incidents, and long term standbys. The Lubbock EMS Honor Guard is also a part of Special Operations.
Each team trains without pay, but when activated, each person receives compensation as when on duty. Training is conducted with other agencies including Lubbock Police Department, Lubbock County Sheriff's Office, and Lubbock Fire Department. Mass Casualty training is done on the service level as well as city, county and region wide exercises.
Membership to Special Operations is limited to a number equal to approximately one third of the department. Prospective members must have been with Lubbock EMS for at least six months.
